MEMO

:

I do not consider Gun Club Hill, Kowloon, now

required by the Military Authorities as a site for barracks,

is a Military Reserve, nor can I find that it has ever been so

recognised in this Office. In the general maps of Kowloon, in

constant use for reference in this Office, the area is not

shewn so, though all Military lands are clearly defined. A por-

tion of it comes within lines marked "Line of defence indi-

cated by Committee" and "Line of ground to be kept clear of

buildings".

I have further a number of tracings signed by

Colonel Storer, C. R. E., China, and dated May 1891 purporting to

show all War Department land and Military Reserves in the

Colony, copies of which I believe will be found in C.S.0.1231 1891 In these tracings Gun Club Hill is marked as "Required for a

Hospital for Asiatic troops" but is coloured quite distinctly

from War Department Land and War Department Reserve. I take

this to mean simply that at the date of these plans, namely in

May, 1891, this site was selected for a hospital for Asiatic

troops and that the War Department proposed to acquire it,as

it is now required for barracks.
